What Are Altcoins?

Altcoins are all cryptocurrencies other than Bitcoin. The name comes from "alternative coins." Bitcoin was first and remains the largest; every other project (Ethereum, Ripple, Litecoin, and thousands more) is an altcoin. Some aim to improve on Bitcoin; others serve different goals, such as smart contracts, privacy, or fast payments.

Types of Altcoins

Many altcoins fall into broad groups. Payment-focused coins (e.g. Litecoin) aim to be faster or cheaper for transactions. Platform coins (e.g. Ethereum, Solana) run smart contracts and apps. Stablecoins (e.g. USDT, USDC) are pegged to a currency like the US dollar. Meme coins and speculative tokens are riskier and often highly volatile.

Why People Use Altcoins

People hold or trade altcoins for different reasons. Some want exposure to a specific use case (e.g. DeFi or gaming). Others speculate on price. Altcoins tend to be more volatile than Bitcoin: they can gain or lose value quickly. Before buying, understand what the project does and whether you are comfortable with the risk.

Risks

Many altcoins have failed or turned out to be scams. Liquidity can be lower than Bitcoin. Do your own research, use reputable platforms, and never invest more than you can afford to lose. In India, gains from selling or swapping altcoins are taxable like other crypto.
