What Is Maker Fee?

The maker fee is the fee you pay when your order "makes" liquidity: you place a limit order that sits in the order book, and someone else's order fills against it. For example, you place a buy limit below the market; when price drops and a seller hits your order, you are the maker. Exchanges often reward makers with lower fees (or zero on some platforms) because they add depth to the book. If you want to minimize fees, use limit orders and try to be the maker when possible.
